Cornell, Rochester Basketball Game Cut Short by Bench-Clearing Brawl No Charges Filed; Wpial to Review

A boys basketball game between Cornell and Rochester was suspended midway through the third quarter Friday night after a foul call caused players from both benches to swarm onto the court.

Coaches, referees, parents and members of the Coraopolis Police Department immediately tried to break up the brawl, which moved to the baseline on the court at Cornell High School. Several players and parents had to be physically restrained.

Once the scrum was settled, Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League referees brought both coaches to mid-court for more than 10 minutes to discuss what to do next.

"It seems that since all of the players from both benches left the bench to come over and help their teammates out, they are all thrown out from the game," Cornell head coach Bill Sacco said. …
