POLICE have stepped up patrols after a man attempted to rape a teenager during an earlyhours attack in south Manchester.

The 19-year-old woman was walking home from work at around 5.30am on Saturday when a man grabbed her from behind as she approached All Saints Park and St Augustine's Church, just off Oxford Road.

There was a struggle before the attacker attempted to rape the woman.

But she managed to escape when the offender was disturbed and ran off.

Police have arrested a 23-year-old man on suspicion of attempted rape. He remained in custody for questioning last night.

Insp Andy Smith said police have ramped up patrols in the area, which is close to several university buildings.

He said: "I recognise the concern this incident may cause due to its proximity to the universities but I would like to provide reassurance.

"We have increased police patrols in the area, and the victim is being supported by specially trained officers.

"We work very closely with our partners, including the universities and student unions, to improve student safety and to ensure the appropriate support is available to victims of crime. …
