STEP BY step, society is curtailing the menace of cigarettes, which doom more than 400,000 Americans yearly to agonized premature deaths. For example, Charleston's council recently banned smoking at city recreation centers, parks and green spaces, including the Carriage Trail. Hurrah. Charleston already banned smoking during events at Haddad Riverfront Park, and it works well.

Making it easy for people to snuff out their cigarettes and unacceptable to light up in these public spaces will be good for everyone, because second-hand smoke really kills people.

Consider midtown Davis Park. It is a lovely lunchtime spot and has benefited from the city's work and investment. It is a good place to enjoy a sandwich or meet a friend with coffee, to see some sky and trees in the middle of a workday. …
