Holiday Tournament Is Good Look at Region

Article excerpt

South Side Beaver wrestling coach Bear McCoy and Freedom coach Jim Covert like the Southmoreland Holiday Tournament because it gives them a preview of what they will see at the Southwest Region tournament.

"We will see a lot of good teams from District 6 and 5, along with a bunch of WPIAL teams," McCoy said. "We've been coming to this tournament the past four years. It's a very good indication of how we will do in the regional tournament."

The 32-team field includes three Class AA teams from District 6 - Forest Hills, Ligonier Valley and United - and three teams from District 5 - Meyersdale, North Star and Northern Bedford.

South Side Beaver and Freedom are among 13 WPIAL Class AA teams entered in the two-day tournament, which begins Tuesday. There are even two Class AA entries from District 10 - Greenville and Corry.

"The Southmoreland tournament gives us a chance to see District 5 and 6 teams we wouldn't see until the regional tournament," Covert said. "This is the fifth or sixth year we've attended this tournament."

The other WPIAL Class AA entries are Beth-Center, Burgettstown, Chartiers-Houston, Ellwood City, Jeannette, Frazier, McGuffey, Mount Pleasant, Southmoreland, Valley and West Greene.

"It will be interesting to see who moves down with the 2-pound weight allowance in effect," Covert said.

Also entered in the tournament are Albert Gallatin, Baldwin, Butler, Gateway, Greensburg Salem, Hempfield, Holidaysburg, Laurel Highlands, Plum, Somerset and Strasburg (Va.).

"Wrestling in this tournament can also help us with seeding at the regional tournament," McCoy said. "A good performance can earn my kids prestige points, which are used to determine the top three seeds."

South Side Beaver's Joe Demor is one of seven returning Southmoreland tournament champions. He claimed the 126-pound title last year as a freshman. …
