Driver Says Foot Slipped | 86-Year-Old's SUV Put Hole in Venice Theatre on Saturday

VENICE

VENICE -- The driver of a Lincoln sport utility vehicle that crashed into the west wall of the Venice Theatre on Saturday night said his foot slipped off the brake and onto the gas as he was attempting to turn south onto Nokomis Avenue from the theater's north parking lot, according to the report filed by Venice Police officer Benjamin Neff.

The driver, Jack Rogers Starks, 86, of Venice, told Venice Police that after his foot slipped, he made a hard left turn, in hopes of avoiding a collision with a Chevrolet sedan that was fourth in line southbound at the Tampa Avenue stop sign.

Instead, according to the report, the Lincoln struck the Chevy, driven by Larry James Henthorn, 76. of Nokomis, before it continued to smash into the theater at about 8:45 p. …
