The state has shut down a Teaneck home-improvement contractor for allegedly operating an illegal and unsafe chimney repair business.

The Attorney General's Office and its Consumer Affairs Division said Wednesday that they had filed a lawsuit against Leroy N. Brown, who did business as B&K Masonry & Chimney, accusing him of multiple violations of the state's consumer fraud law. The lawsuit alleges that Brown had misrepresented himself as a registered contractor and deceived elderly consumers with warnings of safety risks to get them to pay for chimney repairs that were never completed.

A state Superior Court Judge on Thursday froze his assets and temporarily barred him from doing home improvements in New Jersey, the prosecutor said. …
