Playing More Than Ball: Bricktown Ballpark Expands Offerings

OKLAHOMA CITY - Snow tubing at the Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark has been a part of downtown Christmas holiday events since 2005.

This year, the Oklahoma City Dodgers expanded the fun into a festival. It includes additional holiday lighting and decorations, a Candy Cane Land and a special train around the concourse for children. There is a new Santa's Workshop, and St. Nick himself has been available for family photographs on Sundays.

The Dodgers also offer new holiday-themed food and beverages. Two heated tents were added to help with comfort.

"With the Winter Festival, we have rebranded the snow tubing," said Armando Reyes, director of ticket operations and project development for the Pacific Coast League baseball team.

The activities are part of a new initiative by the Dodgers to expand use of an empty Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark when there is no baseball.

"We have this year undertaken an emphasis to add to what we have done in the past," said Jenna Byrnes, senior vice president. "This year we were able to dip our toe into what we can do, such as meetings during the day. A lot of people are looking for a different venue."

Traditionally, the ballpark is used for 72 Dodger home games, Bedlam baseball games between the University of Oklahoma and Oklahoma State University, the Big 12 baseball tournament and some high school games.

"We want to keep the facility active," Byrnes said. "We want to bring people downtown and be sure we are a good steward of the facility."

Groups hold holiday parties or other social events during the snow tubing.

"Companies will use Legends Lounge as a hospitality area during snow tubing," Reyes said.

The Dodgers created a new special events department and named Carolyn Gadboys as manager of special events to expand use.
