For every coldhearted Grinch, there are hundreds of warmhearted Cindy Lous, individuals so kind and generous that they make up for the mean-spirited among us. Just ask the children of East Hills.

On Monday, a Grinch or Grinches made off with 388 toys that had been collected at the Bracey Club House community center and were ready for distribution to children in the low-income neighborhood. Those villains with hearts two sizes too small were no match for Pittsburghers, who quickly demonstrated their hearts are three sizes larger.

City police put out a call for assistance and, in less than four hours, they had collected more than they needed. Far more.

Between the truckload of replacement toys delivered by the Toys for Tots campaign and hundreds more dropped off by residents, two garage bays at the Zone 5 police station in East Liberty were overflowing. …
