After Christmas, Topeka Stores Busy with Customers Returning, Exchanging Gifts

The line of customers waiting to return or exchange Christmas gifts Saturday at Walmart, 1501 S.W. Wanamaker, stretched along the front wall of the store.

"You'd have to be a brave person to return anything today," one woman remarked to another as they left a checkout lane and walked toward an exit.

But the line's length didn't faze Angel Shophar, of Topeka.

Shophar was waiting patiently in line with her baby secured in a shopping cart and a bicycle leaning on its kickstand beside her. The bicycle was too big for an older daughter, she said.

Another woman in the queue said a man had told her to expect a 20- minute wait. She said she already had been in line for about four minutes, and several people were in front of her.

Down the street at Academy Sports + Outdoors, 1133 S.W. Wanamaker, store manager Josh Garrett said many of the returns the sporting goods store had processed Saturday were clothing items being swapped for different sizes. …
