I still have fond memories of going to bed with my tiny transistor radio tuned to 1240 AM, WDNE in Elkins, W.Va., and listening to the"prince" of Pittsburgh and his play-by-play broadcasts. I have followed the Pirates for well over 50 years and even had the privilege of coaching Elkins American Legion Post 29 in a game at Three Rivers Stadium following a Pirates game.

I didn't become a Steelers fan until around 1971. Back then, an Elkins TV viewer had access to about two NFL games on a Sunday - the Steelers and often, it seemed, the Dallas Cowboys. So most of us chose one or the other. We had Super Bowl parties for the Steelers' first four wins, especially the two against Dallas. My second ex-wife even knitted me a Terrible Towel.

With today's technology, sports fans have the option of watching almost any team in the National Football League, regardless of their location. …
