Girls Team Making Noise at Lincoln Park

The WPIAL added three girls basketball teams this season.

One of them hails from a school that is synonymous with basketball success, only it's the school's boys team that has often made the headlines.

Lincoln Park, located in Midland, has found a home in the WPIAL. The program joined Armstrong and Propel Andrew Street as the league's newest members in girls basketball.

The Leopards made their WPIAL debut nine seasons after the school's boys team did the same. The boys team has since won two WPIAL titles and one PIAA title.

The girls team has a long way to go to come close to that success, but that's understandable, particularly because they've only had a program for two seasons. The Leopards played as an independent last season when they teamed with players from Western Beaver under a cooperative agreement. Playing a schedule primarily against WPIAL Class A teams, Lincoln Park went 3-13.

Now in the WPIAL, Lincoln Park finds itself in Class AAA, playing in Section 2 along with defending PIAA champion Blackhawk and teams such as Ambridge, Beaver and Central Valley.

Lincoln Park has taken some lumps, but has also made some strides. Guided by Bill Minear, who won two WPIAL titles and one PIAA title as the boys coach at Sto-Rox, the Leopards have already surpassed their win total from last season, as they came into the week with a 4-4 record. They picked up their first ever section win when they topped Hopewell, and beat two teams they suffered losses to last season - Freedom and Union. The Leopards, though, lost to Blackhawk by 41 points and to Ambridge by 48.

The Leopards have only three seniors, with their top players being sophomore Delaney Minear and junior Alayah Mullins. Minear is Bill Minear's daughter.

"I think if we improve at the rate we did between last year and this year, I think we'll be in a good position [next season]," Bill Minear said. …
