Wpial Wrestling Standouts Eye School Records

Article excerpt

Seventeen wrestlers from WPIAL high schools set a school record for career victories over the past two seasons, including seven last season.

This season, 14 seniors and one junior have a legitimate shot at breaking their school records, with some facing a much tougher task than others. All records listed below include results through Dec. 27, so this week's holiday tournaments are not reflected in the totals.

Belle Vernon Area's Austin Bell and South Park's Jake Wentzel are the closest to breaking their school record.

* Donnie Tasser (133-20), a 2008 graduate, owns Belle Vernon's career record. Bell began the season with a 118-21 career record and has since posted an 11-0 mark, which leaves him five wins short of breaking Tasser's record.

* David Ivashchenko (130-34) set South Park's record in 2008. Wentzel (125-15) opened the season with a 114-15 record and is unbeaten in 11 bouts this season. He needs six wins to earn the top spot.

The two schools with the oldest career record are Seneca Valley and Beth-Center, as each school boasts a record that was set in 1984. Both could be broken this season, with one a tougher task than the other.

* Marc Bartolomucci (138-15), a 1984 graduate, owns Beth- Center's record. Anthony Welsh (117-29) needs 22 more wins to pass Bartolomucci. Welsh came into the season with a 110-29 record and is 7-0 this season.

* Mark Barron (125-19), also a 1984 graduate, is Seneca Valley's career record-holder. Alex Lynch (97-31) has an outside shot at breaking his record, as he needs 29 more wins.

Other school records in jeopardy of being broken are:

* Gage Curry (127-11) needs 10 more wins to become the career leader at North Hills. Tyler Walker (136-31) set the record in 2013.

* Mike Croyle (127-21) and Todd Schuchert (127-22), both 2000 graduates, share Norwin's career record. Drew Phipps (112-13) needs 16 wins to eclipse their record.

* South Fayette could have its career record broken a third consecutive year. …
