Wane Praises Return of Reserve League

THE return of a Super League reserve league will help to ensure young talent continues to progress from academies and into the top grade, according to Wigan Warriors coach Shaun Wane.

Wane was one of the most vocal critics of the new Super League structure introduced in 2015, indicating that the Super 8s and much revised play-offs would leave coaches reluctant to blood younger players.

True to his word, the only debutant fielded by his Warriors side last season was Oliver Gildart, who had already caught the eye in a handful of impressive performances on loan at Salford Red Devils.

And while the 'every minute matters' New Era of Super League was well received and remains in place, Wane expects to give more younger players opportunities in 2016, largely as a result of the new reserve championship spearheaded by the clubs involved. …
