High-Speed Chase Leads to DWI Arrest for Mahwah Man

MAHWAH -- A township man is charged with driving while intoxicated after he allegedly led police on a two-mile chase, which exceeded speeds of 80 mph.

Jeffrey Berger, 28, is charged with eluding, driving while intoxicated and reckless driving. The chase lasted about two minutes, police said.

Sgt. Michael Blondin said a car sped past him about 1 a.m. Wednesday and made a sharp turn onto MacArthur Boulevard, accelerating with its tires squealing.

Blondin made a U-turn and turned his police car's lights on and followed the car onto MacArthur Boulevard, which was wet and icy.

"I actually had the patrol vehicle floored and he was still pulling away from me," he said. "He was going so fast he couldn't stay in one lane."

Suddenly, the sergeant realized another police officer was driving behind him. …
