It just got easier to check out beach conditions on your smartphone, thanks to Mote Marine Laboratory's upgraded mobile beach reporting website and a team of volunteers who contribute real-time updates to the site.

According to visitbeaches.org, the water temperature at Siesta Beach and the Venice North Jetty was 73 degrees on Monday morning -- considerably warmer than the reported air temperatures of 59 and 58 degrees. A beachgoer can visit the site and search by beach name, city or county for condition reports at 27 of Florida's Gulf Coast beaches.

Mote Marine launched the original site in 2006

to help beachgoers avoid the effects of Florida's red tide algal blooms, and recently upgraded the beach-monitoring tool to make it easier to use on mobile devices. The reporting system provides twice- daily, online updates. …
