New Concession Offers Cabins, Kayaks, Canoes

JIGGS LANDING

EAST MANATEE -- When Manatee County decided to buy and restore the Jiggs Landing fish camp more than a decade ago, the goal was to get the dilapidated landmark fully operational again.

A concessionaire is about to make that happen.

Beginning Thursday, Don Collison -- an outdoorsman with 20 years experience in the restaurant industry -- intends to start renting cabins, canoes and kayaks at the county preserve on the Braden River.

Working with him are Chris

Cole, owner of The Adventure Store and Expedition Trails; Samuel Wyrick, a restaurant general manager; and Trina Smith, with a background in the hotel industry.

"We are very excited to learn of the vendor being contracted to operate at Jiggs," said Bill Halstead of the Friends of the Braden River, whose volunteers work with the county on maintaining Jiggs Landing. "This should increase the traffic there and the need for volunteer groups such as ours to assist Manatee County in keeping our parks and preserves in good condition. …
