At J.E. Robins Elementary School in 2014, teacher Debby Edmonds witnessed police climbing onto the Charleston West Side's school's roof to determine with laser whether a recent shooting was within 1,000 thousand feet of the school. It was. This experience served as an impetus for her to apply for Lowe's Toolbox for Education Grant in order to plant something positive for Edgewood Elementary School and the West Side. Lowe's awarded the school $5,000.

This past spring, Edmonds worked with Ian Mcilvaine from River Ridge Church and Steve Massie from Lowe's at Southridge to plan the building of 20 garden beds at Edgewood. On May 4, volunteers from River Ridge and teachers and administrators from Edgewood sawed cedar and shoveled mushroom compost, topsoil, and peat to create a garden. Green's Feed and Seed provided the fill at a discount, and the City of Charleston hauled in free mulch to line walkways. …
