The first 30 rooms of a new community living center for veterans officially opened last week in Butler County.

Move-in day at the VA Butler Healthcare facility was followed by a "housewarming" party the next day for the residents, their families and VA officials.

"They're loving it," said VA Butler Healthcare spokesman Amanda Wilczynski of the 30 residents who took occupancy of their new private rooms. The rooms were decorated with signs and gift baskets.

An official ribbon-cutting for the facility was held Nov. 23 with VA Butler Healthcare's acting director David Cord, VA network director Michael Moreland, VA chief medical officer David Macpherson, the veterans, their families and VA staff.

Ultimately, the new facility will house 60 veterans and encompass 54,000 square feet. The second phase of the $15 million project is expected to be finished in 2013, Ms. …
