ST. LOUIS * You can still "hug" the Gateway Arch.

It says so on the signs rolled out by park rangers Monday to remind visitors that the Arch is closed temporarily for construction of the new, expanded underground museum and visitors center. The current phase of that work is expected to keep the monument closed until sometime in the spring.

Meanwhile, the signs say, "You can still touch, hug and photograph the Arch."

Until Monday, visitors still had been able to ride to the top during the $380 million reshaping of the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial grounds. Access is possible only by walking in front of the Old Cathedral and between construction fences to the south leg.

Befitting a cold, windy Monday in January, few visitors dropped by to hug stainless steel, even if sunshine made it glisten. …
