Police Get Haworth Man to Put Down His Sword

HAWORTH -- Police said they subdued a 27-year-old borough man Tuesday evening who was brandishing a samurai sword and threatening to kill himself.

The man, whose name was not released, was in the bathroom of his Whitman Street home around 6 p.m. with his mother and a 30-inch, "razor-sharp" sword, Lt. Thomas Ryan said.

Ryan said he went into the bathroom and negotiated with the man, first to let his mother leave and later to sheathe the sword. The lieutenant said the man kept taking the sword out of its sheath and brandishing it at him. Ryan said he had his gun drawn.

"I wanted to end the situation as quickly as possible without firing my gun," the lieutenant said. "He told me, 'If you attempt to come at me or take me to the hospital, you're going to have to kill me. …
