Chinese Mystery a Publisher's Disappearance Fuels Fears over Rights

Last week, Lee Bo, the publisher of several books critical of China's Communist leaders, disappeared from Hong Kong. In October, four other men connected to Mighty Current Media and its subsidiary, Causeway Bay Bookstore, also vanished.

It is feared that all five were spirited away to the mainland by agents of the Beijing government. British Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond said Wednesday that, if so, China would be guilty of an"egregious breach" of Hong Kong's limited autonomy under Beijing's pledge to follow the "one country, two systems" approach since the former British colony was returned to China in 1997.

Although Mr. Hammond said Mr. Lee is a British citizen, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi declared the publisher was"first and foremost" a Chinese citizen and that"it was not necessary for anyone to make groundless speculations. …
