Macy's had a rough holiday shopping season and that means making changes in the new year - trimming thousands of jobs, restructuring administrative systems and taking a tough look at which of its hundreds of department stores aren't cutting it anymore.

That's bad news for Century III Mall in West Mifflin, which has hung onto the 173,000-square-foot department store anchor despite years of watching other tenants move on.

The Cincinnati-based retailer announced Wednesday the Century III store open since 1979 - not always under the Macy's name - is one of 40 stores out of its 770 locations to be shuttered by sometime this spring.

Final clearance sales at most of the stores slated for closure, including the Century III location, will begin Monday and run for between eight and 12 weeks, the company said.

But the department store operator's changes won't just affect the 101 associates working at the West Mifflin site, some of whom may be able to move to the chain's other area locations at malls like South Hills Village and Monroeville Mall.

The retailer also plans to trim about 3,000 jobs nationally from its Macy's and Bloomingdale's stores, a move that it said will affect an average of 3 to 4 positions in each of the stores staying open. In addition, about 165 senior executives will be offered buyouts and 600 back-office positions will be trimmed, with 150 of those workers to be reassigned.

As Pittsburghers know, the company began looking closely at its real estate last year. Four of the 40 stores included in this round of closings actually shut their doors last year, including the historic Downtown Pittsburgh location that covered more than 1 million square feet. Macy's acquired that location and a number of others in the region when it swallowed the parent company of Kaufmann's several years ago.
