Mckeesport Coach Smith, 66, Resigns

This past season, Mc-Keesport High School named its football field after coach George Smith. But Smith will never again walk onto that field as Tigers coach.

Smith, 66, has retired as McKeesport's coach after two stints, 31 seasons and 227 victories. He gave a letter of resignation to McKeesport's administration.

You could put Smith into legendary status. He took McKeesport's program to great heights, winning two WPIAL titles and two state championships. He coached the Tigers from 1982-2009 before resigning, unhappy with some things surrounding the program. He came back in 2013 and went 29-5 in three seasons.

McKeesport named its field George L. Smith Field at Weigle- Schaffer Memorial Stadium.

"I'm just glad I won't have to ride a school bus any more to games," Smith said with a laugh "That's so hard on your back."

Smith's overall record was 226-112-5.

"My goal coming back to coach in 2013 was to bring back the powerhouse standing that McKeesport once held," said Smith. …
