I find President Barack Obama's recent effort advocating reasonable steps to control the availability and use of firearms most encouraging. At the same time I'm not hopeful that the members of our state Legislature and our Congress have either the political backbone or moral courage to stand up to the National Rifle Association's opposition.

If the First Amendment to the Constitution protecting free speech is not absolute, then neither is the Second Amendment's right "to keep and bear arms." Our nation's Founding Fathers likely never conceived of high-powered automatic weapons being widely and easily obtainable today. In a free and civilized society there should be reasonable and rational limits on their accessibility. …
