Creative Teachers Get Grants for Working outside of the Usual

The Allegheny Intermediate Unit has honored eight educators as "Unboxed Teachers" who lead their classrooms and students in different and creative ways.

"They do their own thing," said Rosanne Javorsky, assistant executive director for teaching and learning at the Allegheny Intermediate Unit.

The eight unboxed teachers each received a $2,000 grant toward "unleashing creativity in their classrooms."

All are primary, elementary and Head Start teachers.

They are: Amanda Olack, AIU Head Start, McKeesport Area School District; Alexia Pavolik, AIU Head Start, Carlynton School District; Maureen Frew, Avonworth Primary School; Darsey McCoy, AIU Head Start, Steel Valley School District; Nicole Bazner, Chartiers Valley Primary School; Greer Reed, CAPA 6-12, Pittsburgh Public Schools; Monica McElwain, Shaler Area Elementary School; and Lisa Gray, Colfax Upper Elementary, Allegheny Valley School District. …
