Attending the Upper St. Clair commissioners' board meeting March 1 to hear about the proposed Boyce-Mayview Park was like sitting through a bad rendition of the movie "Field of Dreams." In this case, instead of "If you build it they will come," the little voices in some USC commissioners' heads are saying "If you build it, not only will they come, but someone else will pay for it."

The proponents of Boyce-Mayview Park have managed to take the nugget of a good idea and wrapped so much baggage around it that it is doomed to fail before the first spade of dirt is turned.

The athletic fields are certainly a good idea and sorely needed. The proposed Environmental Education Center is not.

It is the brainchild of a few politicians with Pennsylvania tax money to waste and a handful of people who will support anything with the word "environmental" in it.

USC has a tremendous educational facility in its new high school and a beautiful environmental setting right next door in Gilfillan Farm. …
