When members of the Pennsylvania State Bowling Association arrive in Butler County next month for their annual tournament, they'll bring more than their bowling balls.

They'll also bring their wallets.

The local economy is expected to realize an estimated $5 million boost when 8,000 to 10,000 bowlers descend on Butler Township for the tournament, which runs each weekend from April 3 through June 20.

About 2,000 teams of five bowlers each will compete against each other at Family Bowl-Away and Sherwood Lanes, both in the Lyndora section of Butler Township.

The last time the county hosted the annual event, which is in its 65th year, was in 1994. At that time, 1,853 teams participated.

The association is hoping that by the time team registration is finished during the next few weeks, more than 2,000 teams will be signed up. …
