Demarest Limits Length of Public Comment at Meetings

DEMAREST -- Speakers at Borough Council meetings will have to make their points quickly as the governing body has instituted time limits on public comment.

At last Monday's municipal reorganization, the council resolved to limit each resident to five minutes during comment on specific resolutions, ordinance and agenda items, and 10 minutes for general comments and questions. The council can relax those limits on a case- by-case basis.

The council said the timer would stop while officials respond to residents' questions, so they do not take up the limited time. The designated timekeeper will tell residents when they're down to two minutes and when their speaking time is up.

"Sometimes it becomes a free-for-all here," said Councilman Gregg Paster, who put the resolution on the agenda. …
