COOKING, gardening and playing in the woods helps pupils do brilliantly in exams, according to the head of a school with a difference.

Millbrook Primary in Stalybridge has been named one of the top ones in the country and head Elizabeth Turner credits its on-site 'forest school' with helping to improve exam results.

Once a week, pupils from nursery up to Year Six play in the forest supervised by two full-time practitioners. The forest school offers a range of activities including gardening, cooking, fire- lighting, team games and caring for the resident chickens.

Millbrook has twice been judged as outstanding by Ofsted, and is among 187 primary schools nationally where all pupils achieved level 4B or above in reading and maths and level 4 or above in writing at Key Stage Two. …
