I am pleased that the Post-Gazette supports improving disclosure requirements for lobbying activities ("Leash the Lobbyists: Several State Bills Would Improve Disclosure," Jan. 5 editorial).

Lawmakers can start by reviewing the many disclosure requirements that govern unions. Our annual financial statements, just to cite one of many examples, are public record and available to anyone with an Internet connection.

Lawmakers, and your readers, need to make sure that the goal is to bolster transparency, not to silence and intimidate certain interests.

Many organizations, including the United Food and Commercial Workers and the Pennsylvania NewsMedia Association, meet with lawmakers seeking their support.

The NewsMedia Association's website shows that it opposes a tax on newspapers. The association issues "alerts" asking newspapers to "consider editorializing" on certain legislation. …
