Among the casualties of flooding last month on the Mississippi River was the Argosy Alton casino, where high water forced the gambling hall to close for days.

As a result, the casino's revenue plunged by 23 percent in December, Illinois Gaming Board figures show.

All six of the St. Louis area's gambling halls are next to the Missouri or Mississippi rivers, but flooding directly affects only the Argosy Alton. High water forced the casino to go dark for a few days beginning Dec. 28.

In contrast, Lumire Place had a strong December, according to figures released Monday by the Missouri Gaming Commission.

Boosted by a 45 percent jump in revenue from table games, Lumire's December winnings grew by 12 percent.

Helping the area's casino market last month was the fact that New Year's Eve fell on a Thursday to start a long holiday weekend. …
