EAST LANSING, Mich. * A season that has thrown the Illini basketball team curveballs, knuckleballs and spitballs threw them a fastball on the outside corner Thursday night.

Just when the Illini thought it had run out of reasons for players to be knocked from the lineup, Kendrick Nunn, Illinois' leading scorer, missed the game against No. 5 Michigan State so he could remain in Champaign-Urbana to witness the birth of his first child.

A contingency plan had been hatched that would have flown Nunn from Champaign to East Lansing if the baby had been born early enough in the day. A driver had been arranged to rush Nunn from the Lansing airport to the Breslin Center.

Alas, Nunn's first child was in no hurry; Kason Lee Nunn was born at just about the time the game tipped off, coach John Groce reported after the game. …
