Article excerpt

* It's a quad that's been weeks in the making and could go down as one of the best regular-season nights in the state this season.

On Thursday at Bergen Catholic, Paramus - ranked No. 3 in The Record Top 25 - will face nationally ranked Clovis (Calif.), ranked sixth in the nation by Intermat Wrestling, at 4 p.m. Don Bosco, No. 2 in North Jersey and a Top 50 team in the nation according to Intermat, then faces Clovis at 5:30.

The finale will feature Bergen Catholic, the No. 1 team in the state since the beginning of the 2013-14 season, against Don Bosco at 7 p.m. Bosco, led by returning state champion Kyle Bierdumpfel and junior heavyweight Eric Chakonis, filled the hole left when Delbarton chose to push back its match against Bergen Catholic for 10 days. The Ironmen are coming off a huge week in which they beat five state-ranked teams, including Hanover Park, St. Augustine and Paramus.

Paramus, which could be the best public school team in the state, is coming off losses against Don Bosco and Delbarton, but got a boost with the return of injured starters Alex Sebahie, Ryan Freeman and Ryan Forero.

Bergen Catholic (3-0) is coming off a huge tournament victory in the Doc Buchanan Invitational in California despite wrestling without returning state champ Shane Griffith (injured knee) and returning fourth Dan DeLorenzi, who has yet to compete this season. The Crusaders are led by returning state champs Nick Suriano, Joe Grello, Kevin Mulligan and Gerard Angelo.

* The quad resulted from Clovis looking for a couple of extra matches when it travels east for the Who's Number 1 showcase Saturday at The Palestra in Philadelphia. Thursday will serve as a warm-up for Clovis and Bergen Catholic, which will look to take its first major step toward a possible No. 1 national ranking.

The Crusaders will face St. Augustine (8 a.m.), Bethlehem (Pa.) Catholic (11 a.m.) and Lake Highland (Fla.) Prep (1 p.m.) with hopes of earning a showdown with Blair in the 6 p.m. final. Bergen Catholic is ranked second in the nation by Intermat, and Blair, which needed to go down to the final bout to beat BC last season, is ranked third. …
