could run TWICE as often across much of Greater Manchester under plans drawn up by transport chiefs.

Firms are currently bidding to run Metrolink from next year when the current contract ends - and Transport for Greater Manchester hopes that will result in a six-minute service on many lines.

More regular trams are being recommended on the Oldham and Shaw, Bury, Ashton, Altrincham, Manchester Airport and East Didsbury lines, until 8pm on weekdays and until 6pm on Saturdays.

Where more than one route runs between stations - such as Cornbrook to St Peter's Square - they could run as often as every 1.3 minutes.

The 'speculative' proposals are contained in TfGM's tender documents. Currently most trams run every 12 minutes, apart from on the Bury and Shaw and Crompton lines, where they already run every six minutes due to a doubling up of routes. …
