Citing a glut in the aluminum market, Koppers Inc. said Wednesday it would close a plant in Clairton that supplies chemicals used in metals production.

The shutdown will affect 52 employees.

Downtown-based Koppers said it will ramp down operations at the plant over the next six months and transition production to its other facilities in the U.S. and Europe.

The Clairton plant distills coal tar from a nearby U.S. Steel facility into carbon pitch sold to the aluminum industry.

Koppers said overcapacity in tar distillation as well as aluminum plant closures and industrywide downsizing "exacerbated the situation."

The closure should generate about $4 million in pretax savings this year and about $14 million annually beginning in 2017, said Leroy Ball, Koppers' president and chief executive. …
