VENICE

VENICE -- An employee of an independent contractor died after a concrete wall collapsed on top of him at the City of Venice Eastside Water Reclamation Facility on Thursday, Interim Venice Police Chief Thomas Mattmuller said.

The 35-year-old man, who was not identified pending notification of his family, was involved in demolition work when the wall collapsed, crushing him underneath concrete rubble, Mattmuller said.

Venice police and fire department units responded to the accident just before noon at the city-owned facility at 3510 Laurel Road E.

Assistant City Manager Len Bramble said the facility is undergoing Venice's "largest capital project in several years." The project requires the demolition of some parts of the facility so that they can be rebuilt with more capacity. …
