It doesn't matter whether you win or lose, but how you play the game. That's a notion about competition that not enough people believe anymore. Scan the day's newspaper and at least one example of cut-throat behavior for the sake of winning is likely to jump out from the sports section.

A feel-good sports tale, however, comes from a boys' basketball game between WPIAL Class A's No. 1-ranked Monessen High School, which averages 91 points a game, and Mapletown, a Greene County school that struggles on the court given its meager squad of only six players. When the two teams met Jan. 8, the usual thing happened. Monessen was thrashing Mapletown, 45-0, at the end of the first quarter. When the game resumed, Mapletown put in Austin Herpak, a first-year player with autism. …
