NJ Transit and NY Waterway Offering a Discount Ferry Pass

For years, commuters in eastern Bergen County have regarded the Hudson River ferries like a birthday gift for themselves that they can't quite afford to buy. Anchored in Weehawken is a fleet of white boats offering great views of the river and the city, plus an escape from the Lincoln Tunnel's interminable traffic and the Port Authority Bus Terminal's gloom.

The problem always was cost. The price of a monthly pass starts at $279.50 and goes up to $358.50, depending on the destination, and that's on top of paying for the bus ride in New Jersey and the subway fare in New York. And so most people stuck to the bus, jamming the tunnel and the bus terminal to capacity.

Now, NJ Transit and NY Waterway, the company that runs the ferries, are teaming up to get more people out of buses and onto boats. …
