28 Years' Jail for Gang Who Terrorised People in Their Own Homes ; Brutal Men Threatened Residents Who They Mistook for Small-Time Crooks

Article excerpt

BRUTAL gangsters who mistakenly threatened innocent residents - thinking they were small-time crooks - have been jailed for more than 28 years.

The gang thought they were targeting other criminals to 'tax' them for drugs but instead terrorised innocent people. Using a chilling arsenal of weapons such as a Samurai sword, machetes, hammer, and bats, the gang infiltrated homes to bully or attack their victims - including a pregnant woman.

Members of the gang preyed on the Brinnington community in Stockport and were responsible for a string of violent home invasions. One posed as a pizza delivery man to gain entry in one incident.

But seven members of the gang, who regarded the district as 'their turf', have now been sentenced.

They targeted individuals they believed to be responsible for growing cannabis so they could steal the drugs - known as 'taxing' among criminals. But they hit the homes of totally innocent people.

One man sustained a fracture and a deep cut to his arm after being attacked by an armed mob who struck him with a machete at his front door as his partner and children hid in fear.

A young mother and her two-year-old daughter were at home when they were subjected to an aggravated burglary and a pregnant woman was threatened in her own home THREE times over 24 hours.

Det Con Gareth Taylor said: "In varying degrees, members of this gang were responsible for a string of violent and intimidating incidents that left people terrified. This gang thought they could rule Brinnington with an iron fist. They mistakenly thought it was their 'turf' and they could act with impunity, and we know the daily fear with which people lived as a result.

"I hope these convictions send out a powerful message we will not allow organised criminal gangs to laud it over innocent, law- abiding people and by dismantling this group it is a huge stride forward towards giving back this community to the honest people who live and work here. …
