More Frigid Weather Follows Yo-Yo Pattern

The National Weather Service is forecasting single-digit low temperatures for today and Tuesday, making for the coldest temperatures here since, well, last Wednesday's 3-degree reading.

What meteorologist John Darnley has noticed is how these low temperature troughs have been interspersed with what could be considered a passable January warm-up.

Today's forecast calls for a high of 15 degrees "and I think that's being optimistic," Mr. Darnley said Sunday. Factoring in wind chill, he said it will feel more like 4 degrees.

Yet just three days ago, local thermometers nearly hit 50.

"That's kind of been the pattern throughout the fall and winter. We just kind of see this back-and-forth with these systems," Mr. Darnley said.

The snow flurries that started Sunday aren't expected to leave much more than an inch of accumulation, he said, with amounts varying upward at points farther north. …
