Alaska Enjoyed 'Free' Money and Now Will Pay the Price

Referencing the Post-Gazette editorial "Melting Revenues: Alaska Must Quickly Address the Loss of Oil Money" (Jan. 2): Those of us in the lower 49 who would so smugly say"welcome to America" addresses the issue exactly!

Those in charge in Alaska most certainly did err by relying so heavily upon one single industry. Clearly it was those in power over the years who thought it was politically expedient to"give money away" to garner votes and assure their jobs.

Well, as they say, it's time to pay the piper! Can you possibly imagine how much money Alaska would have in its coffers if it had diverted any or all of the"free" oil money? Even a small fraction over the years would have been huge amounts. Gee, maybe the state could've even paved a road to Juneau. But I digress.

Never having heard the term"plan for a rainy day," Alaskans (or more accurately the anointed ones) are now scrambling to cover a whopping $3. …
