Montour in Do-or-Die Spot as It Faces West Allegheny

It is a simple formula for the Montour High School football team.

"We can assure ourselves the No. 2 seed [in the Parkway Conference] with wins in our last two games," Montour coach Lou Cerro said. "A loss in either game and we could find ourselves out of the playoff picture."

Montour enters week eight with a disappointing 3-2 record in the Parkway Conference. The Spartans, who have lost to Central Valley and Hopewell, probably need to win both games to keep their streak of four consecutive WPIAL Class AAA playoff berths alive.

"I'm a little surprised that we already have two losses, but you never know what's going to happen in this conference," said Cerro, who led the Spartans to the WPIAL title game last season. "We have six teams in the Parkway that deserve to be in the playoffs, but only four can qualify for the WPIAL Class AAA bracket."

Central Valley, the defending WPIAL champion, leads the conference with a 5-0 record and has clinched a playoff berth. West Allegheny is second with a 4-1 record. It's only loss was to Central Valley.

"We must win one of our last two games to [assure we] qualify for the playoffs," West Allegeny coach Bob Palko said. "A win in both games would assure us [at least] second place and home field in the first round of the playoffs."

West Allegheny plays host to Montour Friday night. The Indians play at Hopewell in next week. Montour plays host to Moon in its final game.

Montour is tied with Blackhawk at 3-2 in the conference race. Hopewell and New Castle have 2-3 records in the Parkway Conference, but still have hopes of qualifying for the playoffs.

"We have six quality teams in this conference," Palko said. "Unfortunately, only four teams can qualify for the playoffs. One thing for sure about this conference is that we don't have an easy game. It's clearly the strongest conference in the state. …
