ST. LOUIS > Ameren will update street lights * Beginning this spring, Ameren Missouri will begin swapping out its old street lights with new, more efficient LED lights that it says will save customers money.

The utility plans to replace about 25,000 Ameren-owned street lights each year. In five years, about two-thirds of the street lights it owns will be converted to LED, Ameren said in a December report to state regulators.

Once complete, the conversion should save about 62,000 megawatt hours annually, or enough energy to power about 4,700 households for a year. For the new LED lights, Ameren also proposed lowering the flat monthly rate it charges for utility-owned street lights by about 10 percent.

Until now, Ameren had maintained that converting to LED was too expensive. …
