North Jersey Media Group, publisher of The Record, has filed a lawsuit against the Port Authority claiming that the bi-state agency violated public records laws by denying access to internal documents.

The suit, filed in Superior Court in Middlesex County on Tuesday, seeks access to agency documents regarding Governor Christie's travel as well as the closure of access lanes to the George Washington Bridge in 2013.

Until recently, the Port Authority, which runs the region's major bridges, tunnels, airports and seaports, released documents only according to its own in-ternal freedom of information code.

That was supposed to change last summer after the legislatures of New York and New Jersey made the bi-state agency subject to more stringent state public records laws.

Instead of processing The Record's requests according to New Jersey's open records laws, the lawsuit states that the Port Authority processed the requests according to its own internal freedom of information code. …
