Hillsdale Driver Guilty in Crash, Cocaine Use

A Hillsdale man pleaded guilty Tuesday to assault by auto and admitted that he was under the influence of cocaine when he caused a crash that crushed part of the arm of a hospital nurse from Belleville.

Michael Baba had driven his 2012 Toyota Camry past a red light at Washington and Lafayette avenues in Westwood when he struck a 2002 Ford Explorer driven by Niall O'Hagan, a nurse at Holy Name Medical Center in Teaneck, on July 15, 2013.

O'Hagan's vehicle flipped over on the driver's side, crushing his left hand and part of his arm and requiring its amputation below the elbow, Bergen County Assistant Prosecutor Martin Delaney said.

Seated in a wheelchair, the result of a medical condition unrelated to the car crash, Baba, 56, pleaded guilty in state Superior Court in Hackensack. …
