Wayne Coaching Legend Dies at 83 Fred Keil's Football Teams Took 6 N.J. Titles

Fred Keil of Wayne, who built winning football programs at four high schools over three decades, died of cancer Monday. He was 83.

Mr. Keil played football at Pompton Lakes High School and Montclair State -- he was an offensive lineman -- and coached at DePaul Catholic, West Essex, Manchester Regional and Wayne Valley. His teams won six state sectional championships, the first at DePaul in 1962 and the last at Wayne Valley in 1988.

He stepped down from coaching after the 1988 title, which capped a 10-0-1 season. His overall record was 169-49-3.

Mr. Keil retired as a Wayne Valley health and physical education teacher in 1993.

"He was always a teacher first," his son Eric said, adding that his father was proudest of his Wayne Valley Teacher of the Year honor in 1988-89.
