ANEWSAGENT managed to fight off a machete-wielding robber by throwing tins of soup and beans at him.

Samir Sarang, 41, was sorting out the morning papers at his business, Ameen News in Heywood town centre, when an armed thug entered the store.

The knifeman demanded money, but was forced to flee when Mr Sarang fought back with what was nearest to hand.

Police are now hunting the would-be robber who was forced to run away after the businessman's spirited defence of his property.

Mr Sarang said: "I was sorting the papers out, he came through the front door and had a machete in his hand.

"He was saying 'give me the money'. He had a very big machete.

"I just started throwing cans of food at him. It lasted about 10 or 12 seconds and then he just ran away."

He added: "I did a good job, but thinking back anything could have happened to me.

"He tried to rob the shop and he ended up doing a dance on the floor."

It's not the first time Mr Sarang has defended his Market Street store from an armed robber. …
