Weimer Changes Parties to Gop

A Hempfield Democrat went over to the GOP this week.

R. Doug Weimer, a Hempfield supervisor, announced Monday that he has switched from Democrat to Republican.

In a written statement, Weimer said he struggled over the decision but thought it best to move over.

"It has become clear to me that the Democratic Party chooses not to tolerate individuals with beliefs similar to mine," he wrote. "I have found that the Republican Party has long upheld my beliefs as a citizen and officeholder."

Weimer, who could not be reached for an interview yesterday, said in his statement that until now, he and his family have been lifelong Democrats.

In 2004, when he supported Robert Regola's bid for the state senate, Weimer hinted that he might leave the party.

Regola, who had been a fellow Hempfield supervisor and had supported Weimer in his race for the board in 2001, switched from Democrat to Republican in 2003. …
