United Airlines said Thursday that it has appointed a Starbucks executive to lead its department of corporate communications.

James T. Olson will begin Feb. 1 as senior vice president of corporate communications, reporting to Michael Bonds, executive vice president of human resources and labor relations.

Olson, who is vice president global corporate communications at Starbucks, is credited with designing a digital news and employee storytelling platform there, and for leading public affairs for the company's Asia-Pacific and Latin America regions.

At United, Olson will take on some of the responsibilities of Nene Foxhall, former executive vice president of communications and government affairs, who stepped down in September along with the airline's former chief executive officer, Jeff Smisek, amid a federal corruption probe into United's dealings with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which oversees operations at Newark Liberty International Airport. …
