A MAN who tried to steal an off-duty police officer's handbag to fund his journey home after a night out has been jailed.

Jaroslav Gujda, from Oldham, and his friends intended to commit robbery when they could not afford their travel back to Newport in South Wales where they were staying.

Prosecutor Matthew Cobbe told Cardiff Crown Court 21-year-old Gujda, of Horsehedge Street, had been for a night out with friends last August when they discovered they were short of cash.

He said they had considered targeting people at cashpoints, but agreed there was 'too much CCTV.' Instead, they decided to target a woman who was walking along on her own, after her friends went to buy food. She was near Cardiff Central Library when the men approached her. …
